A violent storm in 1974 pulled down an old tree, to reveal a forgotten skeleton. It was in an area behind the gatehouse (pictured above) at St Philomena’s school. Local school boys discovered the remains.
Throughout the early 70s, in the residential area to the left of the picture below, one of the school children grew up with ghostly figures in and around his childhood home.

This was at an area that was once a doctor’s surgery.

Family accounts describe recurring sightings and sounds that defied explanation.
As a young child, the ex-resident spoke of a “frighten lady” in the corner of his room, while their grandmother who lived in the same road, reported “a woman in a large crinoline dress gliding up the garden path.”
Even his parents recalled hearing slow, deliberate footsteps outside their bedroom at night.
Were these female ghosts the infamous Grey Lady who was said to haunt the various dormitories and was heard by school girls shaking the dumb waiter at nearby St Philomenas (previously Carshalton House)?
The identity of the skeleton remains a mystery. We’ve done some more digging about the discovery and the possible connection to the Black Death. You can read about that here.
Exact locations have been deliberately vague. With thanks to Substack.
