*Historical* It was 17 years ago that the traditional high street was beginning to change, and these photos show a turning point.

The independent shoe shop had recently closed, but the greengrocers and butchers were still hanging on.

Do you wish it was like it again, or do you remember any of these places?

It’s important to note, there’s still many lovely local businesses in our high street, that are thriving and adapting to changing tastes.

But for now, let’s take a look back…

Boris Johnson stopped off here when he was London mayor
Mobile phone accessories have taken over jewellery
This had a very nice interior update shortly before closing
Old-fashioned service at this family opticians
Services on our doorstep
You could even pick up a pair of shoes at In Step
A large wine shop now a supermarket
This chemist has now closed at this location
A butchers
A greengrocers
A well looked after shop front
The building is now flats
A much-missed pub
Pleasant outdoor seating
A location connected to paper for many years

  1. The moan then was too many estate agents. However we have a too many coffee bars/cafe/restaurants now. Still miss the greengrocer there is a new pharmacy and just love Calladoodles. I like the Coop and Sainsbury’s but not much selection of fruit and veg in the latter. Sorry that forge area is redeveloped and that where Pinks gym used to be. There is a hairdresser and a barbers post office so probably it could be worse.

    Tara to bow
